I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of watching everything go round in circles. It’s no secret coconut is getting it’s chance in the limelight, much like soy did not too long ago. But time as marches on, it will likely fade into obscurity. Does anyone remember the atkins plan? That’s why I decided to turn to tradition for answers. I’m not going to suggest you restrict calories or carbs, or ban sugar. Heavens, Have a glass of orange juice if you like! Though I would suggest limiting acidic or yang foods. (Animal products, legumes, sugar, coffee etc.)
Also, 3 meals a day is a modern convention. Lunch is unnececary unless you are living on pasta, bagels, and bread.
Here’s what I’ve learned over a year of observation. I’ve tried to keep it simple, and for anyone curious I’ve linked some articles at the end. I’m hesistant to tell you what to eat as everyones bodies are different. With that in mind, lets start with some things to Avoid:
Allium Vegetables- αλεω (aleo, to avoid):onions, garlic, leek, scallions, shallots.
Did you know that animals won’t touch these? Not only that, but Auyrveda, Traditional Chinese medicine and taoists all warn against their consumption.You know how you smell of garlic after eating it? That’s your body literally sweating it out of you.
Brassica Family – Cruciferious: (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, kale, etc.)
These have become quite a staple food in recent years, And as a result we bred and bred them to be ever more nutrient dense and pest resistant. Guess what? We also end up eating more antinutrients than nature ever intended.
You can’t have your cake and eat it too. And speaking of cakes…
Grains/Cereals- Poacae: Wheat, oats, barley, corn, rye, millet, flax, sorgium, Hemp, etc.
Ah, Grains. You’re not very popular at the minute, are you? It it just a fad? Actually, I don’t believe it is.
Not only do grains suffer from the same issues of artificial selection, but they are not particually nutritious to begin with. In ancient times grains were eaten as a last resort- for travelling and famine. There is a reason flour and cereals are fortified with minerals. All that carbohydrate bashing? It’s grains that are the problem.
Nightshades- Solanaceae: Eggplant, Capsicum, Bell peppers, Chili peppers, paprika, tobacco, tomato, Goji berries, Potatoes, etc.)
Nightshades come from the new world (America), bringing with them Inflamation and joint pain. If you are going to eat them, never have them raw.
Sweet, tropical fruit. While it might once have been acceptable to eat in moderation, the majory of modern fruit has been bred to be full of sugar and bears little resemblance to their ancient counterparts. An easy way to tell a plant has been bred is wether it has seeds or not, as seedless plants cannot reproduce naturally.
Dairy– It’s a great food group, though modern practices make it a poison. Flash heating, traumatised mothers and homogenisation are the cause of our woes, not Lactose.
First thing to remember: Never drink straight milk ! We turn it into butter, cheese and yogurt for a reason. I’d also suggest you not have dairy cold. (it’s natully warm.) Did you know that traditionally milk is brought to the boil with various spices before drinking? Also, if you can afford it, get biodynamic milk. (happy cows). Otherwise try and make sure it’s unhomogenised.Do you struggle to spread your butter? Provided its salted, You can keep it on the bench it in a butter dish! And if you fancy a bit of wensleydale every now and then? Go for the younger, softer cheeses- preferably traditional. The less additives the better. Also, its best not to melt or cook cheese. The body can’t digest it.
One last thing: Some people claim dairy products are inflamatory or damage the gut lining. It’s true that milk is acidic. But this mostly is the effect of homogenisation.
These last few are are the same as paleo and shouldn’t come as a real suprise.
- Alcohol- it’s full of fermented sugars (eryhritol)- a kind of sugar that’s practically poison. So if something claims to be “sugar free” but has eryhritol listed as an ingredient? Don’t buy it.
- Cold food and drink. Cold makes things heavy, difficult to process. It’s always a good idea to warm food warm and drink first.
- Empty calories/refined substances. Eg: Protein Isolates, Powdered greens, white sugar/flour, Coconut oil.) While there is nothing wrong with saturated fat, sugar or protein in and of themselves, when isolated they gain the potential to throw our whole system into dissaray.
- Raw Nuts/Seeds. While snacking on trail mix has become quite popular these days, Many of these concoctions are raw, meaning that they often end up containing more antinutrients than grains and legumes combined! I’m afraid Nuts ain’t all they’re cracked up to be.
- Soy/flax– soy is another frankenstein bean, a product of artifical selection.
- Vegetable oils– Just like with paleo, these industrial hydrogenated oils are something to steer clear of.
- Smoothies– While these raw beverages are all the rage at the minute, Blending destroys nutrients. while retaining the same antinutrients.
- Grain fed Animal products-It’s no secret that most products lining our shelves is from sick, grain fed animals. That sickness is passed on when we eat them. Pork is particually troublesome, as is beef.
- Canned food.
- Skins, stems and Peels.
- Microwaved food- Have you ever noticed that things aquire a strange taste and texture after being microwaved?
And that’s everything to try and steer clear of. Just remember: Stress will kill you faster than any poison. So, what’s left? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Here are some of the best, most wholesome foods that you can actually buy at the supermarket.
Asparagus, Artechokes, Beetroot, Carrots, celeriac, all lettuces, endive, Baby spinach, Dinasau Kale, watercress, rocket, escarole etc.()most leafy greens.) cucumber, zikini, squash, spaghetti squash, Pumpkins, Parsnip, swedes, Turnips, Yams, Mushrooms (brown, shukake, portabella, etc.)
- Apples (prefarably granny smith.)
- Seeded Grapes
- Dried fruit (in moderation)
- Mung Beans or Green Gram
- Pidgeon Peas or Toor/Arhar Dal (yellow split peas)
- Lentils (preferably red)
- French/green beans.
- Snake beans.
- Bean shoots.
- Traditional Buttermilk
- Grass fed Butter/Clarified butter (ghee)
- Pastured Eggs
- Soft cheeses (eg: Ricotta, Mozzerella, Cream cheese, fetta, quark.)
- Fresh yogurt (at room temperature, stirred.)
- Beef tallow
- Schmaltz (Chicken/duck fat.)
- Lard (try it, it’s great.)
- Red meat (in moderation)
- Offal (Liver, Heart, etc..)
Nuts and seeds:
- Hemp Seeds
- Brazil nuts
- Chia Seeds (soaked)
- Pine nuts
- Extra Virgin Olive oil
- Seasame oil (Used after cooking)
- Advocado oil
- Rapadura Sugar (evaporated cane juice)
- Maple syrup
- Coconut sugar
- Raw Honey
Grain free Flours:
- Arrowroot flour
- Buckwheat flour
- Bananna/plantain flour
- Cassanva/tapioca flour
- Coconut Flour
- Chickpea/besan flour (soaked and roasted)
- Lentil flour (also soaked and Roasted)
Please keep in mind that this list is merely a guide. If something isn’t listed but feels right, go on ahead! I personally don’t see the point in listing exotic items nobody can afford. And besides! You can eat unwholesome foods occasionally. Stress will kill you faster than any poision. Before I go, here is a quick recap Of unwholesome foods:

I’d also like to highlight the importance of spices. Its easy to think of spices as mere flavorings but nothing could be further from the truth. One could consider them To be like a PH balancer in a sense.
